You feel so astonished with the title, right?
No, don’t be. Sometimes those who preach a precept are the principal defaulters of such.
They look and say great things about life itself trying to paint themselves the best of all, the other way around, they are the cankerworm behind the chopping off of the nutrients of such a developing race.
All seems to be like parables and jargons to you right? Hold on, I’m about to tell you a story of a Department in an Institution that preaches Integrity but remains the saboteurs to the exemplification of such.
Decades ago, there was a Tertiary institution that was touted as the best State Institution among all others. And truly it was, based on some obvious facts embedded in the philosophy of the institution. My Students were told to pay for some dues which Faculty and Departmental dues which were quite reasonable based on what the dues were meant for.
Well… The dues were meant to cater for the smooth running and meeting up some precautionary expenses that may arise circumstantially during every Academic session particularly for teaching and non-teaching staffs of respective Departments and Faculties.
The purpose of the dues looks great, right? Of course, it is, a normal being wouldn’t criticise that idea. Are you still salivating to know what the story tells? Keep on with me…
At the other ends, Students will always have their Association, you know that right?
This means all Departments and Faculties have their Association which consists of students either elected or elected or appointed to run the affairs of such association. You know what? Students must pay for such Association Due to be a certified member of both Department and Faculty. You know that’s right and Ideal in any institution? I salute the Idea because it gives young people to take part in Governance.
The Association Due is solely meant for students (subscribers) and non but students. Students who pay Association dues are regarded as subscribers. How does it appear to you if the so-called subscribers do not enjoy what they subscribed for? But the lecturers are the ones who what the subscribers ought to enjoy. Smiles… It sounds bad to you, right?
How is this possible?
There was a particular Department in that institution that the story is streamlined to hit, the Department name is X. The session approaches the end, students of Department X didn’t enjoy an iota of benefit nor welfarism from the ends of their representatives. But the lecturers do. Lecturers got palliatives filled with all kinds of foodstuffs from the students’ Association’s Funds. Are you surprised? I know you must be asking yourself “But the Lecturers have their funds”. Take a cup of water and calm your nerves.
Yes! They do. The lecturers have more than enough funds at their ends to cater for their respective needs, why do they choose to deep hands into students’ treasury. That’s the puzzle I can’t solve even till the moment I’m telling you this story.
As students pay for Departmental Dues, they also pay for Association Fee. I’m sure you know the difference between the two now right? If no, Departmental Dues are meant for Staffs (Lecturers), Association Dues are meant for students body in such Department.
I said earlier that Lecturers got Palliatives from the student’s funds right?
This seems too wrong to be heard in a Department that preaches INTEGRITY QUALITATIVELY at every ends. Hold on… That’s not all, the Subscriber’s funds were also used to acquire Generator and wiring works for the sole interest of the Lecturers. Don’t feel bad, this is just how it started in my country called NIGERIA.
If at any point in time the Representatives tends to fight for their right, threats of failure will always follow. Who wants to fail? Who will sacrifice his/her certificate to fight for the interest of the students? Of course no one! I’m sure you understood that right? Smiles…
At the end of the session, the student’s representatives couldn’t account for what they spent money on, how they spent it when they spent it… That shows a level of Bad Governance and a reflection of utmost irresponsibility. No student enjoyed a bit from what he/she subscribed for. What a shame on Representatives and Lecturers who Syphon the funds of students for their selfish interest. This shameful act continued for years, subscribers are always oppressed while the lecturers remain the oppressor.
Well… I’m not surprised, this is just a mirror of my Dear Country; FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA where public funds are used to cater for the sole welfare of some unknown CABALS.
Consciously and unconsciously, we are chopping off the nutrients and fabrics embedded in our future.
