Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, staged a protest earlier today, July 15, 2024, over the delayed release of their results and non-deployment to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The protesters, comprising current students and students of the 2022/2023 academic year, barricaded the school’s main entrance, hindering vehicular movement. Their grievances center on the institution’s failure to issue their results and deploy them to NYSC, over a year after graduation.
Tolani, a former student of the Faculty of Engineering, expressed frustration in an interview with a Press Council correspondent; “It’s been a year since I graduated, and my supposed graduation status remains uncertain. My parents demand explanations, but I have none to give. First, it was delayed results, and now it’s non-deployment to the NYSC.”
The students attribute the problem to the management’s inefficiency, citing delayed NYSC mobilization and failure to recognize students who offered the Daily Part-Time Programme (DPP) for their National Diploma (ND), but Full Time for their Higher National Diploma (HND), as Full-time students, even after doing the necessary JAMB regularization.
An anonymous student explained, “Most affected students are DPP students. On the JAMB portal, they have ‘P’ at the back of their names, indicating Part-Time status. Meanwhile, Part-Time students are only entitled to exemption letters, not NYSC deployment.”
The protesters demand prompt action from the management in addressing these issues and to ensure their deployment to NYSC.
