The mindset of some people nowadays is, “I am a fashionista, my body belongs to me and I can go to any length to make myself fashionable. It doesn’t matter what you say. I love fashion.” They will then go the extra mile to be deemed appealing, this will thereby lead to indecency. Obviously, I don’t need to educate us that indecency means; the lack of modesty.
Fashion is said to be a style or manner in which something is done. In popular aesthetic, fashion is an expression at a particular time, place, and in a specific context, especially in clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, and body proportion.
Looking into the meaning of fashion, it is meant for body beautification but some people will take it too far beyond its content which can be termed indecency.
There is nothing wrong with being fashionable or fancy but if it is done with the wrong motive, then it’s bad. Many people don’t care how their physical appearance; all in the name of fashion. It’s no news how people now walk the streets, clad in under-wears claiming to be fancy and this vice is rampant amongst youths of nowadays. They can put on anything just to seem glamorous.
These of course come in several forms; among are cleavage-bearing, bottom bearing, sagging, tinting of hair, tattoos, nose piercing, tight trousers, skimpy dress, mini skirts, nd the likes. Honestly, the list is countless.
The rate at which indecency is increasing nowadays is becoming more unbearable. Appallingly, indecency is even one of the sad excuse for sexual harassment.
Nothing happens without a reason so there is always a reason for everything. Indecency is caused by some factor as lack of proper training, mass media, civilization, peer pressure, and many more.
Charity they say begins at home. Some parent did not bring up their child(ren) in the right way. Some even purchase these dresses for their children to begin with. Mass media is another cause of indecency. Most of the youths nowadays are so much exposed to mass media such as social media, television, newspapers. While some youths are decent from home, they still get corrupted by the incessant promotion of indecency by the media.
Civilization at its peak turning our culture into another thing. Youth now adapt to foreign culture and this has caused some youths to wear or doing anything in such a pattern.
Peer pressure has contributed immensely to the issue of Immodesty. Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are. Youths are dressing immorally due to the friend and company they associate themselves with. An adage says the way you are addressed is the way you dress. The type of clothing you put on determines who you are.
Dressing indecently will lead to a bad image, sexual harassment or molesting
To every problem, there is a solution, in reducing the rate of indecency under the apparel of fashion, youths need to be guided religiously from the cradle. That is, religious, educational, entertainment and other institutions should always promote the culture of decent dressing.
Different clothes are worn on different occasions and appearance is much important but all must portrait decency. Fashion is good and proper but only if exhibited in a decent manner that upholds cultural and religious values. Immodesty can dent one’s reputation, and with a ruined reputation, destruction is at hand.
