We can’t develop as a country without self-development and self-determination to develop. This was stated in the welcome address of the President, Sustainable Development Club, Comrade Temiloluwa Oyeniyi at the 2019 induction ceremony of the club held at the Department of Local Government and development studies resource centre.
In his opening Speech, the Coordinator, Sustainable development club, Mr Amusat Kolawole expressed his profound gratitude to the members of the club for their coordination towards achieving sustainable development. He said the club has been suffering some teething challenges but it is has been a privilege to be the pioneer Coordinator of the club since its inception.
He stated further, “the club is a training ground and a platform which provides opportunities to enhance Students’ understanding and equip them with capacity building, practical field practices and advocacy skills as well as enable them to show and polish their talents towards sustainable National development.
While speaking on the need to ensure the continuity of the club, the Head of the Department, Alhaji Lukman Azeez who was represented by the Acting Head of Department, Barrister Kazeem Oladepo urged the members of the club to be committed in their activities so as to promote the good image of the department as a whole.
In his lecture tagged “Advocating for the SDGs implementation at the grassroots Mr Aderemi Ojo revealed that Nigerians concentrate on Federal issues and neglect the roles of Local communities which are the bedrock of development in any country. He however emphasized on the need to involve the people at the grassroots in development programmes.
He reinstated, “in carrying out an impactful Development Programmes, experts should be informed and have full understanding on what to advocate on, understand the local leaders and their languages, monitor the reactions of the people towards the advocacy as well as organize town hall meetings for the community stakeholders.
The event featured taking of Oath of membership led by the Acting Head of department, Barrister Kazeem Oladepo as well as distribution of Identity Cards to the newly inducted members and interactive sessions on advocacy
