The Polytechnic, Ibadan and her environs experienced a highly glamorous, colorful and aesthetic atmosphere in promoting Music, Culture and Art at the Assembly hall, North Campus of the institution when the final year students (HND2 and ND2) of the department of Music Technology, had their yearly concert which signaled the defense of their compulsory projects. The event was highlighted with the students performing “Oba Koso – The King did not hang” in music and dramatic arts.
The event boasted having special dignitaries from the confines and outside the vicinity of the institution. The event held on Monday, 13th September, 2021 was fun to every lover of arts and culture present at the event. The event was aimed at decrypting long lost facts about the culture of the Yoruba tribe and most especially a clearer picture of the old Oyo Empire in the 18th century and a brief history of Oba Koso (god of thunder) mostly known by people to be Sango.
The Polytechnic, Ibadan continues to act as pace setting and a solid foundation for building of tomorrow leaders in all spheres of life and the performances at the event buttress this fact. The event showcased quality talents in choral (musical) and dramatic artistry.
The Assembly hall was packed to the brim in anticipation of students about the performances of their friends, showering them with encomiums. The students presented their performances in traditional dances and also in harmonized music presentations with split parts (alto, soprano, tenor & Bass). The standard of the performances were nothing less than that of the International Choral contests and it gladdens the heart that these performances were coming from the students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
“The Polytechnic, Ibadan is a place of making and takes you through the process of becoming and you don’t get spoon-fed but you have to do things yourself (through rigorous researches), that is why it’s a technical school so that you learn the technical aspect of music. What you’re seeing today, we constructed those drums and some other costumes and also the arrangement of the set”, those were the words of Dayo George a student of the department of Music Technology who doubles as the Director of the performances during his interview session with the Press Council correspondents. The top notch performances were direct reflection of serious hard work and several practices and rehearsals.
Mr. David Olawole Fadipe, a lecturer from the Arts and Culture section of the Department of Music Technology speaking with the Press Council correspondents stated the tireless work of the department towards building stars in the field of art and further said that they are trying their best to continue enhancing synergy between dramatic artistry and music. However, despite the huge success recorded during the yearly concert; Mr. Fadipe stated their challenge in the aspect of lighting of the stage and reiterates that standard stage lighting in a performing hall would have given a better result than their improvised lighting in a hall meant for normal school events during the dramatic and musical performances. Hence, Mr. Fadipe called on the school management to assist the Department of Music Technology so as to do more in their quest towards bringing out the best from the students.
The event was graced by the Head of the Department, Dr. Olaosebikan; The Registrar of the institution, Mrs. Theresa Fawale; Mr. Olusoji Olatunji of Mass Communication Department; among others were external judges from around the country and other special guests at the glamorous and colorful event.
