Just as the above Yoruba adage, the current situation of students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, is best described as “frying pan to fire”.
A few days after students won the Hostel Fee war against the Management, the majority of the students have reported a strange fee displaying on their portals tagged “E-LEARNING FEE”. Although, the institution has instructed the students to ignore the fee, still, students are left in awe as they tend not to see the reason why it was placed on portals in the first place. Hence, the reason why many see it as a means of “corporate extortion” amidst the present situation in the institution and the country at large.
It was as though the world was against the students, when about ten(10) members of Student Union Executives, threatened with their resignation. Although the reason(s) for their impending resignations is yet to be known to students, students’ hopes are left dangling, as they can’t fathom what would befall them if the body appears to be the mouthpiece of the students falls apart.
Aside from the financial hardship and emotional trauma dominating the atmosphere in the institution, the indefinite suspension of bike men in the institution by the SUG in a memo signed by the SUG PRO has added another avoidable stress to the students. It is no doubt that the bike men have been acting at their will, rather than serving the students, which is supposed to be their priority. Although Shuttles and Napeps, are available for mobility, they aren’t as dependable as bikes, in times of emergency which has creating a huge problem without a feasible solution.
In The Polytechnic, Ibadan, examinations are set to commence in a matter of days, and different issues seem to keep popping up daily.
What would be the fate of students wallowing in stress and trauma, in the forthcoming examinations?
What is the fate of a common student in achieving his/her academic goal in this institution?
What is the fate of every student in the institution, if this trauma persists and new ones keep developing?
