Recently it was observed that there has been hike in the price of sachet water (Pure water) sold on campus from the usual N10 to N15, and two goes for N25, while plastic water is sold for a flat price of N100 per bottle. Press Council correspondents spoke with the Production Manager for Poly Water, Mr. Rafiu Musa who said, “The hike initially was as a result of the sudden increase by the distributors and not the fault of the pure water factory. This is because the price from the factory was the same, but the distributors have added to the price of the water as a result of reasons best known to them.
The distributors are expected to sell for N120 per bag so as to enable the retailers sell for N140, but (the distributors) sell for N130, thereby forcing the retailers to sell for N160 or more. Hence, the unit price is increased to N15 to enable the retailers get more profit from the sale”.
In relation, the Students’ Union Government led by Com. Fadare Blessing held a closed-door meeting with the Director of VSESC; Dr Mrs Olaniyan at around 3:00pm on Tuesday 17th May, 2021 in order to resolve the issue about the water.
After the meeting, the agreement reached was a consideration for the sequential prices of both sachet and bottle water which ranges from the Factory, distributor and the retailers. Hence, the sachet water has hereby been reduced from unit price of N15 each to the original price of N10.
