At noon of Monday, the 27th of November, 2023, The National Association of Polytechnic Engineering Students, The Polytechnic, Ibadan Chapter (NAPES) organized an orientation programme for the newly admitted students in the Faculty of Engineering at the Assembly Hall, South Campus.
The Orientation which has become an annual event, helps newly admitted students know the do(s) and don’t(s) of the institution so as to abide by the school rules and regulations and which will automatically save them from trouble.
Dignitaries present at the event include the Dean of Engineering Department, Engr. Dr. I.O Oladejo, Faculty Officers, The Head of Department of Computer Engineering, Engr. D.A Oladosu, Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Engr. Oke, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Engr. Akeem Gasali, lecturers as well as non-teaching staff of the Faculty.
Com. Kolawole Waliu, the NAPES President, in his opening remark, stated that; the orientation programme is aimed at welcoming, educating and introducing the newly admitted students to the way of life at the Faculty and The Polytechnic, Ibadan at large.
The most integral part of the event was the welcome speech by the Dean of the Faculty, Engr. I.O. Oladejo who emphasized on the value of education and warned the newly admitted students to desist from joining bad groups. “It is a very good idea for students to belong to various groups in the institution as it helps in boosting them academically”, Engr. Oladejo enjoins fresh students of the Faculty.
While speaking with the Press Council correspondents, the H.O.D of Mechanical Engineering department, Engr. Akeem Gasali explained that; “Orientation is a means of acculturation, where students (freshers) enhance their understanding on why they are on campus, the importance of academics, the courses being offered (elective, core and general courses)”. He further said that; “the orientation programme is meant to be made compulsory by the school management for every department and faculty associations because it helps freshers to understand the new environment and know much about the school campus.”
Engr. Akeem Gasali therefore advised the new students in the faculty to be more committed to their academics and as engineering students they should be ready to learn more practical skills that will enhance their technological expertise because technology is what distinguishes them from other faculties in the institution.
Also present at the programme were Departmental Presidents of the Faculty, the Immediate Past President of Faculty of Engineering, Com. Akeem Azeez, Faculty of Science President, Com. Alabi Damilola, amongst others. The event took a more entertaining turn, as various artistes were called on stage to entertain the students.
