Dr. Abiodun Adegbuyi, the Deputy Registrar, Counselling Unit of The Directorate of Student Affairs, The Polytechnic, Ibadan on the 22nd of July, 2024, addressed the issue of Examination Malpractices among students.
In a briefing with members of the Press Council, Dr. Abiodun stated that many students always hide under the excuse of being ignorant of the existing rules guiding Examinations at The Polytechnic, Ibadan. “This is because most students don’t study the Institution’s Student Handbooks given to them in their first year” she opined.
However, according to The Polytechnic, Ibadan Student Handbook and Examinations Guidelines, students are expected to desist from Examination Malpractices such as impersonation, cheating, usage of phones and electronic devices, exchange of answer sheets, bringing in of already prepared materials, presentation of forged or fake credentials etc. As they all come with different sanctions ranging from suspension (a semester or two, depending on the gravity of the offense) and expulsion.
She further states that the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) which comprises of the Dean of all Faculties and Members of the Management Body, only sits twice in an academic session, which is after the exam of each semester except some issues warrants Emergency Meeting. While making this known, she emphasized that any student caught for Examination Malpractice that missed any of the sitting would have to wait for the next sitting which automatically means that such student would be placed on Indefinite Suspension pending trial before the SDC. She reiterated that the decision of the body on issues presented to it based on available evidence is final. “If a decision is taken, a member of the Committee can not reverse it”, she affirmed.
Also while discussing with the Press, Dr. Abiodun, the institution’s Counselor said a student who left home for an examination should know that he/she is not expected to come with a prepared material, mobile phone or any other gadget, if caught, the phone would get seized and the perpetrator will pay a fine that varies depending on the type of phone seized.
