It was a four in one session as the Press Council, The Polytechnic Ibadan in collaboration with CampusPress Hub organized a day workshop on basics of Journalism for campus Journalists on the 24th August, 2019 at Mechatronics Complex, The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The workshop had focused on the need for campus journalists to understand the elements and ethics of journalism as well as the role and impact of journalism on the society.
In his lecture, the Director of CampusPress Hub who is also a Final year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Adejumo Kabir said Journalism plays an important role in our domestic society and therefore must uphold the highest ethical standards. Kabir emphasized on the need for Campus Journalists to apply ethics in journalism when carrying out their various duties as well as having clear impact statements before proceeding on any reports.
As a political researcher for Dubawa, one of Nigerias fact-checking platforms, he educate trainees on how to fact check fake news stating that fact-checking news helps the society to know which news is real and how to act on news they read on social media platforms.
While speaking on the Roles of Campus Journalists on campus and the society, the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalist N.U.J Osun State Chapter, Mr. Kehinde Ayantunji stated that Campus Journalism gives students the opportunity to hone and practice their journalistic skills, and be the voice of change by getting readers especially managements of institutions to think about pressing issues that they probably wouldnt have read anywhere else.
According to Mr. Ayantunji, some campus Journalists need to expand their horizons as well as re-package themselves beyond the campus and discuss on trending issues such as gender equality, human rights and stories affecting human lives at large.
In the same vein, a campus Journalist of Adekunle Ajasin University, Adesola Ogunlajo urged the trainees to be committed and consistent in their day to day activities as journalists. He charged them to be change makers and become agents of change in the society they live in.
