The Joint Minds Club (JMC), The Polytechnic, Ibadan organized their Asiwaju Annual Symposium and Inter-Club debate themed “Progressive Taxation Promotes Economic and Social Justice”, earlier today 26th June, 2024 at ICAN building, The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
In the commencement of the program, the anchor, Com. Oyinloluwa Micheal led the National Anthem, while the Joint Minds Club’s anthem was led by IJM Shoyeye Ayomide.
The Joint Minds Club Empror, JM Ige Abiola Adebayo acknowledged the presence of everyone and explained what Joint Minds Club stands for. “The club is only for accountancy students and it is to educate and give them more knowledge about their course of study” the Empror opined.
The Patron of the club, Dr. Kingsley Binitie who doubles as the keynote speaker while addressing the theme of the day ascerted that the value of tax in Nigeria is now 7.5 percent of their income and Nigeria has not gotten to the stage that tax can take care of the economic prosperity, therefore to enhance the prosperity of the Nigerian economy, there should be accountability and transparency.
In the remark of the SUG President Com. Oyekan Tobiloba Emmanuel who also is the club’s Protocol Officer, he commended the present administration for including an inter-club debate into this year’s symposium. “I hope the next administration will continue in that footsteps” he said.
Prior to the commencement of the debate, one of the judges, LJM Oyebode Yusuff explained the rules that guided the debate and highlighted the basis by which they will be judging each participants, as he also gave insights to what the debate topic entails.
After thorough arguments and battle of words among participants from first and second speakers of supporting and opposing team, LJM Oyebode Yusuff one of the judges announced the Great Fellows Club as the winner with 149 points.
The host club, Joint Minds Club emerged the first runner up with 136 points, the Junior Chamber International Nigeria, The Polytechnic, Ibadan as the second runner up with 114 points, the Corporate Bankers Club with 108 points and Prudent Underwriters Club with 80 points.
Both participants and winners were asked to attend JM induction night for their certificates, awards and prizes.
LJM Oludapo Bababtunde Bakare who was also a former emperor while speaking with Press Council members appreciated the effort of the current administration, and emphasized on the purpose of the event that it is to educate the students of the institution at large.
Also present at the event were Club leaders and other student leaders of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
