On May 14, 2025, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Senate Council, has completed a two stage inquiry into a serious dispute between the Students’ Union Treasurer and Vice President. Following thorough review and witness testimony, the Council delivered disciplinary measures aimed at safeguarding campus order and upholding the institution’s standards.
The first hearing was held on May 5, 2025. At the invitation of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the Senate presided over the initial hearing on May 5, in the Senate House. Both the Treasurer and Vice President were present, along with one witness for the Treasurer.
Treasurer’s Claim: In her letter to the SRC, the Treasurer alleged that during an executive meeting she was threatened with spiritual harm using “charm” (voodoo), hereby endangering her safety.
Vice President’s Counter: He countered that her accusation was baseless, also accusing her of damaging his reputation by wrongly claiming he sold receipts without any proof.
After hearing both sides and examining the evidences presented by the Treasurer, video recordings, voice notes, and the eye witness accounts, the Senate President adjourned the session to gather further testimony.
The second hearing was held on May 14, 2025.
The inquiry resumed with additional Students’ Union Executives (SUE) who had attended the original meeting where the confrontation happened. These witnesses shared details to help lay out a clear sequence of events for the confrontation, which unfolded in front of eight SUE members.
After evaluating all testimony and materials, the Senate Council rendered a ruling designed both to penalize misconduct and reinforce the Institution’s code of conduct:
To the Students’ Union Treasurer:
The treasurer received a “very strong warning” for making serious accusations without sufficient proof and for “indecent behavior” unbecoming of student leadership. The Senate council emphasized that such conduct sets a negative example for the student body and must not recur.
To Students’ Union Vice President:
Upon verifying the Treasurer’s claim that he threatened her with charm, the Vice President was found guilty of endangering a fellow student’s well being a “very serious offence on school premises.” Effective immediately, he is suspended indefinitely from his post, pending a clear demonstration of remorse, personal reform, and respect for the ethics of office and his identification card has been withdrawn.
The Students’ Union is committed to accountability, order, and the promotion of peace within the campus community, remarked the Senate President.
“All Students leader are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct in the service of our great Union.”
The Press Council reaffirms its dedication to transparent, fair, and impartial processes, in coordination with the Senate Council and the school Management will continue monitor adherence to all disciplinary measures to preserve the integrity and harmony of campus life. Fostering a learning environment where all students can participate without fear or intimidation.
