The National Association of Polytechnic Engineering Students, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Chapter, organized an Inter-departmental Speech Contest through the office of the Vice President for students of the Faculty of Engineering (FENG). The contest, themed “Renewable Energy Technology: A Sustainable Solution For The Future,” was held at Assembly Hall, South Campus, The Polytechnic Ibadan.

The event started with the introduction and recognition of notable and distinguished guests, including the judges, Mr. Oluwafemi Richard and Mr. Ebeleye Sango from the General Studies Department, the immediate Past President of FENG, Com. Ajibola Azeez, the FENG Presidents, Com Kolawole Waliu, the Faculty Speaker Comrade Rosamatu Ismael, and the SUG Speaker, Senator Folahan Adnan, among many others.

Com. Akinkunmi Akintomiwa, the NAPES Vice President, gave the opening speech and explained the essence of the contest. He said, “The contest is to enhance public speaking and help students in the engineering department improve in speech contests.” He also advised the contestants to keep striving for excellence regardless of the contest results, as it is an opportunity for them to aspire and inspire.

One of the judges, Mr. Oluwafemi Richard, spoke on the theme of the contest, “Renewable Energy Technology: A Sustainable Solution For The Future.” He explained in detail the basis of renewable energy and its benefits to the environment, especially during natural disasters.

After the initial rounds, the judges announced a tie between the Computer Engineering Department and the Civil Engineering Department and to break the tie, they were given a second round where they discussed GMOs.

After the second round, the judges declared Computer Engineering as the winner with 85%, Civil Engineering as the runner-up with 80.2%, Mechanical Engineering in third place with 61%, Mechatronics in fourth place with 59.6%, and Electrical Engineering in fifth place with 59.5%.

During the event, one of the sponsors, Visita Essence-B, talked to the students about their product and gave gifts to those who participated in their question and answer session.

After the announcement of results, all participants received medals and certificates of participation while the winner, the first runner-up, and the second runner-up were given awards.
