On Thursday, the 9th of May, 2024, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Nigeria, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, staged the Fifth Edition of the ASIWAJU INTER-FACULTY SPEECH CONTEST, which took place at the Assembly Hall, North Campus of the Institution.Â
At the commencement of the event, JCIN Amb. Sandra Ekene – National President, JCI NIGERIA, through a virtual call, addressed the congregation, welcoming all in attendance and commending the JCIN TPI Board of Directors, led by JCIN Member Akande Moses Olamide, for putting together such incredible programme. She further congratulated the contestants for securing the opportunity to showcase their leadership and intellectual prowess.
The JCIN TPI Local Organisation President, JCIN Member Akande Moses Olamide, took turns to welcome and appreciate all the guests, students and students leaders of the Institution who were present at the programme.
The Chairperson, Planning Committee of the event, JCIN Member Araromi Sandra, also addressed the audience, giving an exposition on the purpose of the event and thereby appreciating all in attendance.
In procession of the event, the host, Savvy Bolu introduced all the guests and judges present; the P.R.O. The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Alh. Adewole Soladoye, Dr. Olajide Taiwo (Admissions Officer), H.O.D. Mass Communication Department, Dr. Olatunji Olusoji, the SUG President, Com. Oyekan Tobiloba, the Executive Secretary, JCI Nigeria, JCIN Sen. Adeyemo Olaonipekun, JCIN Amb. Akinbode Abitogun (NVP S/West District 2), JCIN Mem. Tiamiyu Harun Opeyemi (CVC S/West), and all other guests and student leaders present.
The theme speaker of the day, the Executive Secretary, JCI Sen. Adeyemo Olaonipekun, spoke on the theme topic; ‘Economic Impact of Exchange Rate Fluctuations on Local Markets’.
He spoke extensively on how as youths, we ought to constantly equip ourselves in implementing ideas for our voices to be heard. This would further encourage youth inclusivity in top-level decision making.
After the theme session, the Contest officially kicked-off with the Chief Judge, Dr. Olatunji Olusoji addressing the audience and contestants on the rules and modalities of the competition. Other Judges are; Mr. Egbeleye, Mr. Richard, and JCIN Member Fawaz Awolumate (Time keeper).
Representatives from each Faculty was to speak on the topic; ‘Should Government or Market Force Implement price Controls to Mitigate the Effects of Exchange Rate Fluctuations on Local Goods?’.
Below is the list of all contestants;
1. Faculty of Business and Communication Studies(FBCS): Akinwale Peter and
2. Ishola Titilola Oluwakemi.
2. Faculty of Financial and Management Studies (FFMS): Oluloro Emmanuel and Fayomi Busola Racheal.
3. Faculty of Engineering (FENG): Oladayo Olalekan and Olukayode Israel.
4. Daculty of Science (FSC): Olawande Isaac Opeyemi and Ibeh Florence.
5. Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES): Fenuga Adetola and Akinpelu Yinka.
After two highly competitive rounds of speech delivery from each Faculty represented, and careful grading by the Judges, below was the result of the contest:
Faculty of Business and Communication Studies – 73.3 (1st Position)
Faculty of Engineering – 71.0 (Second Position)
Faculty of Financial and Management Studies – 68.3 (Third Position)
Faculty of Science – 59.0
Faculty of Environmental Studies – 49.0
The high point of the contest was the declaration of FBCS as the Winners of the 5th edition of the ASIWAJU INTER-FACULTY SPEECH CONTEST.
The winners; Akinwale Peter and
Ishola Titilola Oluwakemi were both presented with Full payment of their Second Semester school fees, as winning prize, courtesy of Mr. Adeboye Adebayo.
The 1st and 2nd Runners-up were presented with consolation prizes.
Also, the 4th and 5th position got consolations prizes of vintage wears from CEO, A’Prime Wears.
All the participants were decorated with medals and certificates of participation.
The rest of the event had the audience in loud jubilations, photo sessions, red carpet interviews and upbeat music by the DJ.
