As humans, we are difficult creatures. We have goals laced with hope. We strive and inevitably hope to reach a certain point at a certain period or duration in life. We look forward to seeing things happen, like having it happen so easily and quickly, with or without little efforts.
But, as humans, when the outcomes of these efforts fall short of our almighty expectations, we tend to have a go at quitting. We tend to believe such goal is not meant for us to be achieved. We psychologically believe there are those naturally sophisticated for such goal.
During this period, the key you need is ‘Persistence’.
Persistence is the ability to maintain action regardless of your feelings. You press on, you keep nailing even when you feel like quitting, until you achieve that important goal.
People give up so early because they have wrong expectations of themselves and the outcome. We expect the journey to be easy, and we are surprised when we find the reality to be the opposite. Our enthusiasm quickly melts and the fire got quenched.
Einstein persisted and stayed with problems longer to make sure he found exactly what he was looking for. He once said “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”
Persistence, has a lot to do with your success in life, academic and business. Calvin Coolidge once said “The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”. Talent and genius cannot take the place of persistence.
There are times I pick from the experiences of some lecturers who spent more years rather than usual to lay claim to academic pursuit. They kept persisting, not minding the years being spent (not wasted), not keeping records of their folks that had graduated before them, or the societal pressure. They keep persisting to achieve their aims and objectives.
Ryan Holiday writes, “It’s okay to be discouraged. It’s not okay to quit. To know you want to quit but to plant your feet and keep inching closer until you take the impenetrable fortress you’ve decided to lay siege to in your own life — that’s persistence.”
Sometimes, we think and ask ourselves, ‘why not me?’. Other times, we soliloquize and probe our inner minds with the question ‘why not now?’. Need you be aware; it is not you neither not now because life itself is funny and hellbent on testing our resolves at times to weigh how much ready we are for life successes.
If you cannot persist, you cannot achieve. Be persistent!
