The lecture rooms at Sewage Hall in The polytechnic, Ibadan is nothing less than a nightmare. Sewage hall 1-3 is indeed actually nothing to write home about.
Last week Wednesday March, 31st 2021 made it known that students in all the sewage halls are sitting on a keg of gun powder. First was the issue of a student fainting in the class due to congestion and too much of heat, although the girl was currently reviving but there was no doubt that the heat and the congestion choked her more and resulted to her collapse. On that same day, some set of guys who came in a cream color muscle camry came into the class, sat on the table and they started drinking. When the next lecturer came in, he instructed them to stop what they were doing and sit accordingly if they are for the class or they move out or he moves out. These guys refused to obey, the lecturer left the class and promised he wont be coming back if insults is all he will be facing whenever he comes. Instead of these guys to apologise, they went out of the class, entered their cars and drove off right in front of the lecturer. It was later discovered that they weren’t Ascomite. And since that day a lot of strange faces have been wandering around sewage. This is a bell of warning to the school that these students are in danger and immediate action needs to be taken.
Everyday is a drama or the two, the class board is bad, the classroom is always unkept except for the sweeping. Cobwebs has taken over all the classes in sewage. Every now and then, students are fighting cobwebs, if not cobwebs, they battle with wasp if not that, noises emanating from the back benchers will not allow peaceful studying to occur. In fact, the rain has made it known that the roofs are also leaking. It so funny and dishearten that students especially freshers who are supposed to be made to love and commit their loyalty to the school are being groom to despise the school.
A classroom or a lecture room plays a lot of role in the development of a student and that is because students and teacher spends most of their time in that building. As a result, a classroom must have a positive, conducive and effective learning environment where both the lecture and the teachers will feel relaxed, calm and comfortable.
Unfortunately enough, just to start with the external environment of sewage. It is only the front compound of the class that is cleared, the back of the class is more like a thick forest and this causes a lot of disturbance to students while in class. For instance, there was a day during lecture was ongoing, all we could hear were hummings of birds from that bush. And there are countless time when wasps will fly into the class during lectures and then students will be running in order to avoid being stung by those flies. In fact, these insects has turned the class to their habitat as there is no day you will enter any sewage hall and those tiny little things won’t be causing issues. Apart from that, it is so unnecessary to have bushes around a class as we all know that place might be turned into a dungeon of crimes and different illicit activities.
Moreso, the interior part of the class is the worst of all. The population of the mass communication student is nearly 2000 and imagine that enormous numbers of students gathered in class that will only contain about 1000-1200 people, where are the rest expected to sit to receive lectures? It seriously a disturbing issue for every student of that department as they all have to inconvenient themselves in order to give room for others to sit. Everyday of their lives in The Polytechnic of Ibadan is always survival of the fittest. Here and there, there will always be issues with seats and space to stay.
This brings me to the issue that erupted between the Accountancy Department and Mass Communication department last semester. The fight was all because the mass communication students wanted to get into the class so quickly so that they will be able to get a seat for themselves. Assuming there were enough provision for seats, the struggle won’t be that intense and fights won’t be emanating. Up till this moment, the struggle is still on as accountancy students are always at the receiving end because most of the times, mass com student will barge into their classes while they are receiving lectures all because of securing space. There was even a particular day, these students interrupted the accountancy students while they are writing test which is totally wrong but they have no choice. If they don’t, they will end up standing throughout the entire day. so, what then is the importance of coming to school when at the end of the day, you end up going home with pains to nurture?
Therefore, we call on the school management to see to this pressing issues, the population is way too much than the class and this is costing these students a lot. Imagine coming to class for a whole day and you wont be able to say one or two things you have gained from your classes. The noise that comes from the students is making coming to class unbearable even lecturers are fed up and are tired because the large population as resulted to mix ups. A lot of people who are not even students of the institution comes into the class and they start perpetrating evil. Series of stealing and harassment even though none has been publicly reported. These are problems students faces every single day.
We solicits, they are soliciting and the entire students of the institution is calling on the school management to address the bad state of learning rooms in sewage, to address the issue of insecurity in sewage and to make and provide a comfortable and suitable learning environment for all the students in entire sewage hall. We need the management to make hay while the sun shines.
