It was a day to behold in the early morning of the 21st of February, 2019 in HND 2 Insurance Department lecture hall, as the SUG Students’ Representative Council’s clerk, Senator Wilson, refused to leave the class after he was bid to do so by his lecturer.

It is the custom of the lecturer Mr. Kumaya, to send out anyone who is not writing in his class, and senator Wilson was not the first student of his class that would be asked to go out.

Though, he politely gave his reason for not writing to the lecturer, the reason being that “I can’t write while standing and that I won’t see clearly if I sit down as I am at the extreme back of the class.” Despite that, he was still asked to leave or he (the lecturer ) leave the class for him. His resilience made the lecturer to leave the class, but when the lecturer was about to leave, he asked his full name from the class governor, Senator Wilson hearing this, moved closer to Mr. Kumaya and said his name by himself.

In a brief interview with him;

Press: Can we meet you sir?
Sen. Wilson: I am Senator Oyegani Daniel Wilson

Press: We saw the way you reacted to your lecturer today, what gave you the boldness to react that way? Sen. Wilson: Thank you my press. Why I reacted that way was the fact that most of those lecturers look down too much on us students. They don’t always mind the way they talk to students, they talk to us anyhow, they unnecessarily abuse students, they call them different types of name, and they tend to override we students and I feel it’s not right. So, I am not standing up for myself alone, I am standing up for the entirety of the students of Insurance Department, HND 2, cause the way they treat us is not nice at all. That is what gave me the boldness, I don’t mean to be rude and I know I am not rude, so, I am not apologizing to anybody. I am not rude I am just standing on my right. Thank you.

Press: As a member of Students’ Representative Council, will you advice all students to act like you if they found themselves in similar situation?
Sen. Wilson: Yes! All students should act that way, cause if we continue to keep quiet, this kind of thing will keep going on – it will keep happening in our institution. Lecturers will override us, they will impose so many things on us, like right now, they are imposing a fee of 1000 naira on the students of Insurance department, when we don’t know what they are going to do with this 1000 naira, if we keep quiet, by next session, they will increase it to 2000 naira and we don’t know what they are doing with this money. So, that is why we need to stand up at the grassroot, even the Federal Government is imposing lot of things on the masses, then they can not give explanation on what is happening, so, we need to stand up at the grassroot, if the students can come out in mass and fight for their rights; Nigeria will be better, and The Polytechnic, Ibadan will be better as a whole.

Press: But, I believe you know that they are your lecturers and they have power over your results, so, are you not afraid of your results or do you have any godfather that will assist you when it comes to the issue of your results?
Sen. Wilson: I don’t have any godfather, God is my godfather and I’m not scared about my results, result is just a document, by the grace of God, I am an entrepreneur, I don’t care about my result, if I have it – fine, but if any lecturer tries to tamper with my result, the lecturer also should be ready to tamper with disappointment in The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

And once again, I reacted based on the condition of our class, the class is not conducive, there are no enough chairs, the number of students outnumbered the number of desks and chairs that are in our class. The class is not spacious enough to accommodate the number of students that The Polytechnic, Ibadan admitted into insurance department, HND 2, so, because of the inconvenience of the class, most of us were standing up, we could not even hear what the lecturer was saying because there is no Public Address System. These are the things that make students react when they are not comfortable; when the learning environment is not comfortable.
