“…how can I resit for an exam I don’t know whether I have passed it or not all because my name doesn’t appear on the score sheet?”
Background
On Friday, 21st June, 2019, the ND 2 Students of Science Laboratory Technology Department went ahead to ramp about the result of GNS 111 of Citizenship Education which was unfavourable, leaving many students without a name on the score sheet.
It started that the result of the course, GNS 111, Citizenship Education was released in the evening of Thursday, a day prior the examination day of that same course that was to be taken by the ND 1 students.
The release of the result didn’t only decimate the hope of many ND 2 Science Laboratory Technology students who were going to resit for the exam consequence of failing it in the first attempt, it also put many into state of confusion as to whether to resit or not because their name didn’t appear on the score sheet, and thus are not sure whether they failed the course or not.
“The citizenship education result was pasted around 6 pm, while the ND 1 students were having their exams the next day. “Only about 1500 names appeared on the result, while the rest of the names didn’t appear, and the students concerned were asked to rewrite the exam, which they totally went against” Miss H., a student of the department told PRESS COUNCIL.
It was gathered that this issue deeply affected the DPP students of the department the most, as the supplementary score list most times contains the names of the DPP students, and it was obtained to be fondly done that students who find their names on the supplementary score sheets don’t have their scores recorded in most cases.
“From my findings, it’s kind of becoming a tradition that they won’t write supplementary results unless names printed on score sheets which most DPP students are victim of.
SLT department advised the students that are victims to write the exam again to be on the safer side as we can’t tell who passed or failed…… Thou they didn’t later write it” Comr. Habeeb, President, National Association of Science and Technology Students (NASTES) said.
What Is Believed To Have Caused It
From the report obtained by PRESS COUNCIL, there are a number of hypothetic stories obtained from students of the department about what could have caused this. Many said the population of students was overwhelming and thus arose fatigue and affected marking spree, while many said it was fault from the students who filled their form numbers in the place of matriculation numbers during examinations, or as said by others that it may probably be a case of missing script.
The Case Of Missing Scripts
The case of missing scripts is found not to be new when it comes to results in the department, and some other departments. Many students of the department have been apparently told to resit for exams whenever their scripts are missing, leaving them in a state of quandary over what shouldn’t have happened in the first place. Results play the vital role in why students come to learn, so missing scripts of students do no good than leaving students confused and burying their hope alive.
“In ND 1 first semester, I took Biology exam, and when the result was pasted, I didn’t have a result. I made attempt to search for my script, but I couldn’t find it. So I was disturbed, and had to take the exam again this semester in ND 2,” A student told PRESS COUNCIL.
Unequivocally, in recent times, many students of the department whose name didn’t appear on the score sheet believed to be attributed to the case of missing scripts. But is it not questionable that scripts of over 500 students were missing at a time?
Other Similar Stories of Delayed Result.
Hitherto, as the delay in results have been attributed to many factors; student’s registration and the likes, there is still the growth of this canckerworm in many departments, and the effects of this on the students are infallible.
A number of students from Mass Communication Department told PRESS COUNCIL, “In Mass Communication department, we are yet to see our ND 1 GNS results; Economics and Citizenship, and we are done with our first semester ND 2 exams already.”
Also, “some lecturers released first semester ND 1 results after first semester ND 2 exams too, but I guess they gave those who could have had a re-run 40 cos there was no chance of re-writing the exam.” Another student of Mass Communication department said.
“This is happening in my department as well, though they’ve released some results but those that their names didn’t appear on the score sheet have not been given the privilege to know what their fate is, even some lecturers don’t want to see students bothering them for result which is not supposed to be. I’m also a victim.” A student from Mathematics and statistics department told PRESS COUNCIL.
Groans have left the mouth of several HND 2 Mechanical Engineering students as PRESS COUNCIL also gathered that many students were asked resit for exams because their scores weren’t recorded.
“I’m also a victim concerning this GNS course. I sat down for the exam and even registered for the course but unfortunately I was recorded nothing. Meanwhile the results was posted late, a day to that exam which has been done by HND 1 and we were told that we should go for it. We have printed our course form for this session, imagine if our result have been out earlier the issue might get solved but late.
Same thing happened to our power students but because their results came out early it was resolved and later came out with ours.” R. told PRESS COUNCIL in an exclusive conversation.
“I’m not the only one that’s affected with it. Wanna tell you about the issue of results. I’m presently in HND 2. We sat for GNS exam 2017/2018 first and second semester bit when the result was out nothing was recorded for us not that we have not paid school fee as well. But we were told to sit for the exam next year which will lead to extra year. We have reported to HOD as well but he seems turning a deaf hear to it as I’m concerned, but now that we have lodged complaints, they told us they will work on it.” another student of the department said.
Also Computer Science department, PRESS COUNCIL obtained reports about Citizenship Education result of some DPP Students that are yet to be released, and that of the Use of English results of first semester ND 1.
Inference And Consequences
It can be ascertained that the issue of delayed results mostly arise from courses of the General Studies; English, Citizenship Education, Economics, Psychology, and more.
Results have always been the catalysts for students getting enthralled in reading. And if results release are delayed, not only will students’ morale be lowered, many find it dysfunctional to their self being, and thus get derailed as there’s no check to keep them on track of their academics.
Several complaints were lodged at the GNS department by various parties concerned, and the department has been keen to make resolutions to the aforementioned complaints.
Note: The initial of the names of the students who spoke with the PRESS COUNCIL is used because the students preferred anonymity.
It’s going to be ending of mine day, except before finish I am reading this great article to improve my know-how.
