On Tuesday, 17th of March 2020, the Students’ Representative Council (SUG); The Polytechnic, Ibadan sat for their seventh assembly where all indigenous association due was ratified and NANS candidate was also screened.
Shortly after the mace was ushered in by the Chief Whip, Senator Siyanbola Adams. The Deputy Speaker, Senator Sheriff Yekini followed in the absence of the Speaker in the person of Senator Ogunlade Johnson hence the meeting was presided over by the Deputy Speaker.
Thereafter, the house recognised the presence of external observers, (Directorate of Students’ Affairs & Press Council),
Subsequently, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) aspirant, Comrade Tegbe Steven introduced himself to the house, as a student from the Department of Surveying & Geo informatics. He informed the house as aspiring for the office of Public Relations Officer (PRO). In his statement, he promised to ensure all institutions get firsthand information from the National Association. He also assured that he would organize a council of Speakers for all legislative presidents. Senator Akinpelu Habeeb representing the Department of Computer Science gave kudos to Comrade Tegbe for his articulate presentation, saying he was totally impressed by the charisma he had shown. He then implored the comrade to state any aid he felt the SUG can offer to strengthen his candidacy, and if he emerges, how he intends to give back to The Polytechnic, Ibadan. Comrade Tegbe cited; physical support, ratification, and canvassing, he didn’t fail to mention financial support too from both the management and Students’ Union.
The DSP also applauded Mr Tegbe for his wonderful performance, and he was told the SRC would look into his ratification and his request and would get back to him soonest. Mr Tegbe said his appreciation to the house and took his leave.
He was then replaced by Comrade Adeoye Adebowale Mayowa from the Department of Accounting who had been appointed as Director of Media & Publicity. According to him, the appointment came at the digression of the zonal coordinator, as he had been a versatile and active member of NANS since his ND days.
More so, the Senators raised a matter concerning hike in the indigenous association dues, yet without strong scrutinizing from the management nor the SUG, and after a long and tedious deliberation in the dark, the Congress passed into law that all indigenous association were now mandated to slash their dues, and it shall not exceed the cap of five hundred nairas, (N500). And the house voted in a landslide of 15 to 2.
Conclusively, Senator Akinrotimi Oluwatosin moved for the adjournment of the meeting and was seconded by Senator Aransiola Oluwanifemi, and that brought the closure of the Congress.
