At the early hours of today, 16th May, 2022, all entrances to the institution were locked, denying students entrance into the school.
The gates were bombarded by students, who were seen gathered at the school entrance requesting that the gate be opened. The students had cardboards on the gates with the inscriptions “No result no exam”
“All bushes must be cleared before exam” “We want stable electricity and water for hostelite” “Resolve General Issues”.
It could be recalled that the demands were earlier stated to the management by the Student Union Government few days ago.
Mr Alajede, Orisun hall warden, addressed the situation, calming and imploring the students to let peace reign before inviting them to a round table discussion.
The SUG president Comrade Adedamola, once again read out the conditions presented by the protesters and these conditions were taken in.
While speaking with our correspondent, some students who pleaded anonymity, stated their takes on the protest
“I was reading calculus from home, on getting to school, I met this Rubbish.” an aggrieved student lamented.
“It is better if we lodge complaints about our results now, while in school before getting out, as it will be more difficult then” a protester explained.
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Mr Makinde Akinwunmi came to address them and give the management’s view on the protest, the student populace was not comfortable with it and they proceeded to go to the state secretariat to make their grievances known to the state government.
A student while speaking with our correspondent said, “The school does not have the right to bring in soldiers and operation burst into the school while we are having a peaceful protest, when we were having security issues all the school could bring was amotekun”
At the Governor’s office, the students demanded to see the Governor but it was said that he hadn’t been to the office and the Special Assistant to the governor on Student affairs Mr Olojede Victor addressed the students and was given a letter to the governor stating their issues. The content of the letter is the issues which the students are facing which include;
- General student portal issues
- Not enough academic staff
- No conducive learning environment
- No proper medical facilities
- Slow computation of results
- Overpopulation on students
- Limited classrooms
- Insecurity on campus
- Inefficient & Incompetent cyber control (CIDM)
- Reduction of student school fees & other related fees
- Consultant issues
- Light up project on campus
- Inadequate hostel facilities
Mr Olojede Victor assured the students that the letter will be delivered to the governor and the issues will be treated accordingly. Also present at the protest was the NANS JCC chairman, Comrade Quadri (Asiwaju) and other notable student leaders.
Following the peaceful protest, the management of the institution has directed for the immediate suspension of the examination earlier slated to begin today, via a mail sent to students. The mail also advised students to keep calm and await further directives from the management.
