In a recent move that has sparked intense reactions across Oyo State, the government has approved the renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, a decision that has drawn sharp disapproval from the students and alumni of the institution.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has formally rejected the renaming initiative, describing it as unjustifiable and a threat to the institution’s rich legacy. In an official press release dated June 26, 2025, the Union expressed deep disappointment, stating that the decision “disregards the rich heritage and history of our beloved school.”
“For over 50 years, The Polytechnic, Ibadan has stood as a beacon of academic excellence and nation-building. The name itself carries weight, pride, and recognition across Nigeria and beyond,” said Comrade Oladipupo Olamide Daniel, the Union President.
The SUG emphasized that the name “The Polytechnic, Ibadan” is not just a label but a legacy earned through decades of excellence, producing distinguished graduates and gaining national and global respect. They warned that the proposed change would not only confuse academic records and alumni affiliations but also erase the identity of an institution many hold dear.
A supporting campaign material titled “Save the Name, Save the Legacy!” has also gone viral on campus and online, outlining five major dangers of the name change:
• Erasing over 50 years of legacy
• Weakening a globally respected brand
• Confusing alumni and academic records
• Disconnecting graduates from their identity
• Reducing the school’s reputation and value
The campaign stresses that “This name is more than a title, it’s history,” and argues that real development should come through increased funding, innovation, and improved student welfare not a change of identity.
Students, alumni, parents, and other stakeholders are being urged to stand together to oppose the change. The movement is also gaining traction online with hashtags like #SavePolyIbadanName, #LegacyMatters, and #PrideOfTheSouthWest.
The Students’ Union and the entire Student body has called on the state government to reverse the decision and allow the institution to retain its original name. As it is clear that all other Student leaders and Current Stakeholders are in support of the Union stand, they have also expressed willingness to engage in dialogue to explore alternative reforms that would enhance the institution without compromising its historical identity.
“The Polytechnic Ibadan must remain as The Polytechnic Ibadan,” the Union insisted in bold text at the end of their press release.
As the controversy continues, all eyes are now on the Oyo State Government to see if it will heed the call of the students and stakeholders or proceed with the renaming plan.
