The Dean of Students’ Affairs at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Mr. Makinde, has addressed concerns surrounding the recent hike in school fees and the challenges related to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), urging students to remain calm, responsible, and proactive.
At a stakeholder meeting held on December 3, 2025, between student leaders and the school management, represented by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Mr Makinde. it was clarified that the recent increase in school fees was a state-wide policy approved by the Governor of Oyo State, and not a decision made solely by The Polytechnic, Ibadan..
He clarified that the revised fees for ND2 and HND2 students were already communicated at the time of their HND1 admission during the 2025/2026 academic session, noting that their fee structure differs from the previous session 2024/2025 academic session.
Mr. Makinde emphasized that The Polytechnic, Ibadan is not the only institution affected by the adjustment, urging students to compare with other state-owned schools for context. He revealed that despite the changes, only 658 students out of over 30,000 have paid their fees, limiting the school’s capacity to implement the new development
Speaking on the delay in NELFUND registration and disbursement, the Dean explained that students must first pay their fees before applying for the loan. He assured that students who apply and qualify for the fund will be duly refunded after disbursement.
“We understand the delay and frustration, but we are working toward a transparent and efficient disbursement process this session.” He said
Mr. Makinde also highlighted upcoming developments that the fee adjustment would help facilitate. These include access to Nigeria’s Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the provision of high-speed Wi-Fi across classrooms, hostels, and major locations on campus to aid students with assignments and research.
He urged students to complete their payments early to avoid penalties, registration delays, or being barred from examinations as the academic calendar progresses.
